Salicylic acid

Step 1 of up to 2

Salicylic acid is the aspirin precursor and the willow-bark active ingredient. Industrially you make it by the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction: take sodium phenoxide, push CO2 in under pressure and heat, and the phenoxide attacks CO2 at the carbon ortho to the oxygen. Walking it back, the carboxyl group is the youngest piece on the molecule.
